Reintroducing 'The Hardened Heart Series: Portraits of Humanity' by David Leese
Confronting Bullying, Hatred & Violence. Our mission is to capture the resilience and strength of the human spirit through powerful portraits that tell a story of endurance, hope, and transformation. Each heart, hand-cast in pure Plaster of Paris, bears the scars and patches of a life well-lived, representing every loss, gain, joy, and pain. Just as David Leese discovered when he saw the grime and cracks in his first plaster cast, each piece reflects the essence of our shared experiences, shedding light on the beauty that emerges from our struggles. For over a decade, the Hardened Heart Series has championed its mission at the state capitol, numerous exhibits, and the March for Our Lives. Though COVID-19 paused our efforts, we are now making a triumphant return. Stay tuned as we share the inspiring story of Hardened Hearts, unveil exciting upcoming projects, and reveal how we are driving meaningful change. By bringing this family-friendly art project to the public, we challenge society to reflect on what has made their hearts hardened and to foster understanding, inclusion, and unity. With over 35 unique images like 'A Broken Heart,' 'A Heart of Gold,' and 'A Greedy Heart,' the 'Hardened Heart Series' aims to inspire empathy, connection, and a deeper understanding of the human condition. Follow along to witness the portraits that speak to the heart and soul of what it means to be human.
THE MISSION OF HARDENED HEARTS
“Utilizing art to amplify the voices of those who have been silenced.” The mission of The Hardened Heart Series by David Leese is a powerful exploration of the human condition, reflecting the deep emotional scars that life leaves on individuals. Central to this mission is a commitment to raising awareness against domestic violence and sexual assault, using art as a means to give voice to those who have been silenced. As we continue to evolve and expand the Hardened Heart Series, our future direction is focused on broadening the impact and reach of this work. We aim to take this message to new audiences through exhibitions, educational initiatives, and collaborations with organizations that share our commitment to social justice, human dignity, and the fight against domestic violence and sexual assault. The series will continue to grow, encompassing new narratives and perspectives, ensuring that the voices of those who have been silenced or marginalized are heard and remembered. Striving for positive change, one day at a time. This is real. This is home.
The Hardened Hearts exhibit and campaign is a heartfelt tribute to those whose voices have been lost or unheard. Through the symbol of a heart, we hope to create a space where people can come together to learn, share, and reflect on the important issues that affect us all. It’s not just about raising awareness; it’s about fostering understanding and encouraging compassionate conversations in a safe, welcoming environment. Throughout this journey, we have encountered deeply moving stories people have shared with us—stories from parents, friends, and entire communities whose lives have been touched by challenges and hardships. What’s struck us the most is how common these experiences are, often happening in places we least expect. Our latest video, "It Could Have Happened to Your Neighbor," reminds us that these struggles are not far away. They’re happening in the communities we call home. The mission of Hardened Hearts is to gently open the door to education, awareness, and the resources needed to support real change, one step at a time. We believe that change is something we create together, and your support means everything to us. By sharing this message, especially on social media, you can help amplify these important voices and spread awareness far and wide. Visit our website to learn more about how you can get involved and make a difference. Together, we can create the change we want to see. This is real. This is home.
